To acquire the maximum years of use out of your log cabin or log shed, it is vital that diligent maintenance be performed regularly. This is especially true if the structure is 100% natural wood since wood is susceptible to mold, mildew, and termites. Thankfully, routine upkeep is not extremely time consuming or difficult.

The first and most important step in log cabin or log shed maintenance is observation and prevention. For example, prevent termites by having a pest company perform a treatment upon initial setup of the structure and apply a stain. Or if you observe a water stain find the leak (typically located in an improperly sealed area) and make the necessary fix. And if you see mold or mildew, address it immediately to prevent it from spreading since they are the most prevalent and persistent enemies of log structures.

A yearly inspection of your log structure’s exterior for termites, mold, mildew, and general grime, is strongly suggested. If termites are found, a pest control company can arrange to have them exterminated. In regards to mold, mildew and grime, the cabin or shed can be rid of these with a thorough cleaning. Use a pressure washer filled with a mixture of water and wood cleaning agent. The pressure washer should not exceed 1500 pounds per square inch (psi) and should be used with caution since its severity can splinter the wood and chip the paint.

Your log shed or cabin should be painted and/or stained upon initial construction. Depending if your wood structure is exposed to harsh weather or not (i.e. constant sun, severe storms, etc), be sure to reapply the stain and/or paint every 3-5 years and perform touch-ups when required (i.e. after pressure washing). Doing so will prevent further damage from the weather, mold and mildew, and termites. Following this and the aforementioned suggestions will surely extend the life of your log shed or log cabin (and your enjoyment!).
