How To Care For Log Cabins And Log Sheds

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

To acquire the maximum years of use out of your log cabin or log shed, it is vital that diligent maintenance be performed regularly. This is especially true if the structure is 100% natural wood since wood is susceptible to mold, mildew, and termites. Thankfully, routine upkeep is not extremely time consuming or difficult.

The first and most important step in log cabin or log shed maintenance is observation and prevention. For example, prevent termites by having a pest company perform a treatment upon initial setup of the structure and apply a stain. Or if you observe a water stain find the leak (typically located in an improperly sealed area) and make the necessary fix. And if you see mold or mildew, address it immediately to prevent it from spreading since they are the most prevalent and persistent enemies of log structures.

A yearly inspection of your log structure’s exterior for termites, mold, mildew, and general grime, is strongly suggested. If termites are found, a pest control company can arrange to have them exterminated. In regards to mold, mildew and grime, the cabin or shed can be rid of these with a thorough cleaning. Use a pressure washer filled with a mixture of water and wood cleaning agent. The pressure washer should not exceed 1500 pounds per square inch (psi) and should be used with caution since its severity can splinter the wood and chip the paint.

Your log shed or cabin should be painted and/or stained upon initial construction. Depending if your wood structure is exposed to harsh weather or not (i.e. constant sun, severe storms, etc), be sure to reapply the stain and/or paint every 3-5 years and perform touch-ups when required (i.e. after pressure washing). Doing so will prevent further damage from the weather, mold and mildew, and termites. Following this and the aforementioned suggestions will surely extend the life of your log shed or log cabin (and your enjoyment!).

Selecting Your Log Shed

Saturday, October 17th, 2009

While any regular shed will do, log shed enthusiasts – or anyone wanting a superior shed – will want to consider a top quality log shed kit. These easy to assemble do-it-yourself kits include doors, windows, and 100% natural wood pieces for the walls and floor.  If that were not enough, companies who specialize in log shed kits offer customizable options per customer request, including personal design implementations and disassembly (the latter allows the shed to be disassembled and reassembled again). If you are ready to begin selecting such a shed, it is time to make a decision and take some measurements.

Before shopping for your log shed, you first want to decide what the shed will be used for. While the common uses of sheds traditionally include extra storage or additional hobby space, first-rate log sheds have a plethora of possible uses. Once you have determined the purpose of your shed, consider where on your property it will be placed and prepare to gather measurements.

Taking detailed measurements is significant since they will be used as a guide to determine the size of shed that can fit in your allotted space.  Begin by measuring the area that you have set aside for the log shed to occupy, including the height if there are trees or overhangs near the premises.  Keep in mind that you will want ample space to construct the shed kit, and be sure to visualize the doors opening to ensure they have enough room to function without hindrance. Also take into consideration the space needed to maneuver around the perimeter of the shed (required for maintenance and cleaning purposes, clearing brush, etc.). Once your measurements have been thoroughly comprised you can begin your quest for a log shed supplier who sells the shed kit that will meet your needs.
